New Trouble

29 04 2009

Hi Everyone,

It seems that when it rains, it pours.  I woke up this morning (after getting about 2 hours of sleep) to the smell of my main computer literally burning.  The motherboard had short-circuited to the case, and caused a fire inside the case itself.  I managed to put out the fire without much trouble, but the damage done to the motherboard cannot be repaired.  I have applied for an RMA on the board itself, as it’s been working fine for 5 months without an issue at all, and then this happens.  Hopefully that will be approved and I can get my main system back up and running.  Until it’s back online though, the uploading will have to wait.  The drive that I backed-up all my mp3’s on was damaged by the power surge that went through the case at the time of the shortcircuit, and so I will have to try to recover what I can on the drive itself.  It’s a shame too, because it was a 2tb external drive that I just bought.  Right now, I’m hating firewire like you can’t believe =-(.  Anyway, please bear with me, obviously, there are things happening that are way beyond my control.  I will try to take time tomorrow to answer all the comments, and do apologize for not doing it tonight.  Extremely tired, and have had a rough day =-(.  Thanks once again for all the support, we’ll make it through this.

Best,

Bright

What a drag – so sorry to hear that. You have some great music here. I’m not sure if you had another copy of your MP3’s but if you lack any – I’ll be glad to see if I have them. I’ve downloaded some great stuff from you and I would be glad to “give back” if the need may be. I also have lots of music of my own – about 180 gigs currently (although that may not sound like much to you)…LOL.

Thanks,

Don’t blame you for being ‘tired’….what happened to you would probably make me go looking for the gas pipe!
Take what time is necessary and don’t worry about us. We’ll still be here when you’re ready to resurface.
Good luck!

@Orgcha
Thank you so much for understanding. One of the things that has been weighing on me this past week is the fact that I have not been able to communicate with everyone. Didn’t really realize how much I have come to depend upon the kind words and reading about how people are enjoying the music.

Thank you so much! I’m hoping to have the coding complete on the new portal complete later today. Once it’s complete, anyone with a membership will be able to post there, so hopefully that will speed things up in terms of getting all the music back online and together where it can be found and enjoyed.

@Bubba
Thank you so much for the comments about the music you found here. I do have additional copies, the problem is getting the drive connected to this computer. You see, the main drive that they were stored on is an internal HDD, and I cannot open up this computer to connect it. So thinking about buying an external HDD enclosure that I can use to connect to this computer via Firewire. 180gb is a very respectable archive =_). On the new portal, everyone with a membership will be allowed to post, so if you would like to share some of your archive, that would be wonderful! I hope to have the coding complete for the new portal done later this afternoon.

Dear Bright…

This is really terrible you know. Really! I can fathom how you must be feeling.

all your uploads have vanished !?
and now your PC is down ??

Whoa! There are ten million sites which upload … god knows what at rapidshare, and they picked only quietmusic?? what are they now rapidlycruelshare? I find uploading even >10mb file a tiresome task, and now to find so many GBs of your uploading gone in whiff – whoa! These guys should be tried at International Crime Court of impudence. All i am saying is, seeing the volume of uplaods, they could have atleast send you a reminder to remove it from their servers.

Just checked the web about RS deleting Files;

1.Anyone can report a file to be ‘copyright abuse’
2.Changing file names and hiding albums name do not work.
3.RS does not normally delete file on its own, but if it is reported for copyright abuse.

But how can they ever fraud your account? Don’t understand, and seeing your comments above, i guess they aren’t forthcoming in clarifying.

Here are couple of thinks we can do:

1. Mediafire was the apt alternative: Unlike RS, it is free and mostly doesn’t inhibit downlaod/uplaods speeds. Pro options is available for unlimted storage etc. But ruled out as it is in US.

2. Choose Megauplaod – the second most popular. Based in HK. But they do have a anti-piracy policy.

3. Have own FTP server based elsewhere. Economically may not be viable.

4. Keep RS. But alternatively have backup or mirrors in hosts like Megaupload.

5. Do not publish the download links. Let those who want it, leave a message. and you can send the links to them. The links stay closed group. Decreases site’s open reach but increase uploads validity.

6. Open the site only for some days in a month. Lock it down on the others. Decreases incursions

7. link-protection services like
http://atpcf-tiny.co.uk/
http://tinyurl.com/

It masks the original RS link. Thus making it dificult to report the original links. Might just work.

Well bright… just want to tell you. That will be visiting this place, probelms, links, or no links.

Thanks for you efforts, and With you

Dawnz

PS:

8. We can help you in uplaoding stuff back on, and anything else required.

Grateful for all the lovely music, and kindness.

You’re welcome. BTW< how do you become a member or get on your list so I can continue to the new portal?

Long time no see, buddy. Seems that it’s not a lucky month for both of us, lol. I’m still very busy and hope that everything will be better in the end of the month. :D
If you need any help, just tell me :)

This is a shame! This page has become one of my favorite ones… I just hope everything would turn out right. I am a little bit worried about you, my dear quiet music, in the case that you might be taken to a trial or something like that.. best regards…

@Dawnz
Thank you so much for everything. I can’t express how much your words mean to me. In regards to your suggestions here are my thoughts.

FTP server – That is certainly an option, however, it’s one that can cause some serious issues, as then the server would be wide open to DDOS attacks or simply overloading the server with requests. The other major concern would be the bandwidth usage, and the cost that would incur.

Keep RS – Unfortunately, I would prefer not to do that. Obviously, the main reason is the simple reason that they closed my account totally. I’ve never heard of that before, and I have no wish to have it done again. Using it as a secondary host is certainly an option, but I will never use it as a primary ever again. The sad part of that, is that it’s almost certain that they increased the number of users because of the uploads that I had. I’m not saying that to put more weight on the uploads themselves, that’s just the rule of probability. Right now, the best option is more than likely depositfiles. It’s fairly widely used, has a more relaxed stance in terms of copyright issues and the speeds are actually better than RS. I just wish there was a service that would allow uploads to multiple hosts from one access point. In the past, there have been a few here and there, but they never stuck around, and because of that, the links die after the service goes defunct. It would almost be worth creating a service like that to ensure that the links remain active.

Do not Publish The links – Unfortunately, that removes the basic principle that QuietMusic is based on. Freely downloadable music for everyone. Additionally, before this whole fiasco, QuietMusic was getting around 4000 hits per day. I don’t know how many downloads per day, but I would imagine it was up there. Probably multiples per visit on average. The workload alone for not publishing the links would be outrageous.

Open the site for a set number of days per month – This is an option, but not one that I’m very happy with. Again it goes against the very principle that QuietMusic embraced. The sharing of beautiful music for everyone.

Link Protection – This is definitely something that will be done. I don’t like the fact that it’s an additional step that must be done in the submission process, but I don’t really see an alternative. It’s possible that something can be done within the scripting itself so that only members are able to see the links. Not sure about that, so will have to research that further.

Thank you so much for the offer to help with the reuploading process. Right now I’m waiting on the motherboard to come back. Once I get it back, it will take me about 30 mins to put my computer back together. Then the uploading will begin in earnest. I heard a couple of songs that will be added to the new portal. Unfortunately, getting the portal up and running is severely hampered because of the computer being down. But thank you very much for not only your loyalty, but also your generous heart =-)

I’ll be posting a link to the portal in an announcement that will stay at the top of the page. Membership will be open to everyone, but will require filling out a simple form. Hopefully it won’t turn too many away, and everyone will still be able to enjoy the wonderful music that will be there =-).

@Mr. Neveralone
A bad month seems to be a bit of an understatement, lol. But I have faith that it will get better. I’m hoping to have the portal up and running within the week. I know I said that last week, but unfortunately, with my computer going down, it’s seriously hampered my ability to modify and upload. Thank you so much for the offer of help. With the new portal, everyone will be able to upload and post, so it should begin filling up fairly quickly. After you read this, would you mind tossing me a message on Yahoo? Would really like to talk to you.

@Hector
Thank you very much for your concern. I have not gone to trial, nor do I expect to. No profit was ever made because of this blog, and none ever will be. That was never the intent, and I do hope that it will never have to come to that. Hopefully, everything will be alright within the week. Once I get my motherboard back, it should move forward much quicker. Thank you once again =_).

@Frogmen
So far, the only cost involved was the shipping that I had to pay to ship the burned motherboard back to the manufacturer. Beyond that, everything else is hopefully covered.

Thank you so much for helping! Unfortunately, my workload has been rather heavy lately, and so have not had much time to work on the portal. I am going to take time this weekend and have managed to work through or around the majority of the issues that have cropped up. The main issue I mentioned earlier remains, but I’m hopeful to have a solution soon =_).
