Flowing water has been inspiring for me since I was a child, my favourite playground was at a small creek behind my parents´ house. The sound of the rippling water somehow stimulated my fantasy and made my mind go wandering to imaginary places.
Water is one of the most essential things for all forms of life on Earth, maybe even in the whole wide universe. The circle of the water from the source to the ocean, ascending into the sky and falling down as rain again, appears like a symbol for life itself. The river, permanently flowing, permanently changing and yet ever remaining the same, embodies both movement and constancy.
When I started writing the music for this album, Herman Hesse´s novel “Siddharta” came to my mind, especially the part when Siddharta joins Vasudeva, the old and wise ferryman.
He learns to listen carefully to the multiple voices of the river, until one day he perceives the sound as the universal “aum” , an eternal song of oneness and harmony.
Years ago one of my journeys lead me to one of India´s holy rivers, the Yamuna, an experience that had a deep impact on my life ever after. People would come from near and far to bathe in the sacred water to get washed from their sins and find release from the wheel of reincarnation. Night and day the air is filled with the chanting of holy mantras, a scenery of humility, love and joy.

This is a very smooth, melodic album, suitable for healing, relaxation, and even physical chi exercises. Keyboard, synthesizer, and flute sounds create a rich, soothing musical texture that leaves one feeling pleasant and content. This music can be used for many purposes and should be suitable for many tastes. I particularly liked the first track and the 5th track, and the ambience of the Far East on the closing track makes a nice tribute to the roots of Reiki healing.

This album is a good way to get some taste of Gandalf’s late 80’s work, although it has a common problem what compilations usually have : it contains the most popular tracks not the best ones.

Besides this it HAS the atmosphere for those who are responsive for it and it contains some of the most beautiful Gandalf tracks ever made such as The River Of Permanent Changes and Gate To Infinity.

Gandalf’s fourth album is an instrumental conceptual work. Again working with the same crew he used on To Another Horizon, he creates a gorgeous symphonic soundscape that any prog rock fan will spooge over. If you are into Genesis and Camel you need to hear this early Gandalf disc.  Highly recommended.

One of Austria’s most accomplished international musicians, versatile multi-instrumentalist and sonic landscaper Gandalf celebrated 27 years as a recording artist with this hypnotic nine-track collection, his fourth on new age mecca Real Music. Although the whole new age movement was just getting started as he came of age, Gandalf’s music has always created its own mystical East-meets-West world rather than follow trends. The inspiration for this disc came to mind when he was reading Dante’s Divine Comedy.
